The eyes, they stare me down into slumber
I walk among the corpses that flow
I hear the screams of the innocence drowned
In the lake of pus, whispers unending
There is no escape from the prison subconscious
Forever abused by nightmares
As a curtain of black descends upon my sight
A new world is birthed with a flash of red light
Walls of skin, hellborne architecture
A nest of gore makes up this scape
I walk onwards into oblivion
Hooks and chains rend my own flesh
The severed heads of the dead still howl in pain
Their screams become my screams
I have become unborn
My dream the placenta
Blood drooling from my eyes

La mine, c'est le lieu qui met le plus en exergue les disparités sociales : d'un côté ils sont des milliers à descendre dans les entrailles de la terre, de l'autre une poignée s'élève socialement ; d'un côté ils meurent par centaines sous l'effet des coups de grisou, de l'autre ils consolident leurs richesses. Cette dualité, elle traverse aussi Kentucky : d'un côté le black metal atmosphérique asphyxiant, de l'autre l'americana et le folklore héroïque. Panopticon est dans la lutte permanente !

The cover painting (Udslidt by H A Brendekilde, if anyone is interested) and the music is in perfect alignment. So much sorrow, so much despair... Right from the start I can feel my soul wither away with each riff. Still, towards the end of the record I can catch little glimpses of hope in the melodies. A beautiful journey in the bleak reality of existence.
